It used to be when you wanted to get scared by a prediction of Doomsday you had to go down town and look up the crazy guy with an “The End Is Near” sandwich sign.

Space storm alert: 90 seconds from catastrophe
A fierce solar storm could lead to a global disaster on an unprecedented scale (Image: SOHO Consortium / ESA / NASA)
IT IS midnight on 22 September 2012 and the skies above Manhattan are filled with a flickering curtain of colourful light. Few New Yorkers have seen the aurora this far south but their fascination is short-lived. Within a few seconds, electric bulbs dim and flicker, then become unusually bright for a fleeting moment. Then all the lights in the state go out. Within 90 seconds, the entire eastern half of the US is without power.
A year later and millions of Americans are dead and the nation’s infrastructure lies in tatters. The World Bank declares America a developing nation. Europe, Scandinavia, China and Japan are also struggling to recover from the same fateful event – a violent storm, 150 million kilometres away on the surface of the sun.
It sounds ridiculous. Surely the sun couldn’t create so profound a disaster on Earth. Yet an extraordinary report funded by NASA and issued by the US National Academy of Sciences (NAS) in January this year claims it could do just that.
Over the last few decades, western civilisations have busily sown the seeds of their own destruction. Our modern way of life, with its reliance on technology, has unwittingly exposed us to an extraordinary danger: plasma balls spewed from the surface of the sun could wipe out our power grids, with catastrophic consequences.
The projections of just how catastrophic make chilling reading. “We’re moving closer and closer to the edge of a possible disaster,” says Daniel Baker, a space weather expert based at the University of Colorado in Boulder, and chair of the NAS committee responsible for the report.
It is hard to conceive of the sun wiping out a large amount of our hard-earned progress. Nevertheless, it is possible. The surface of the sun is a roiling mass of plasma – charged high-energy particles – some of which escape the surface and travel through space as the solar wind. From time to time, that wind carries a billion-tonne glob of plasma, a fireball known as a coronal mass ejection (see “When hell comes to Earth”). If one should hit the Earth’s magnetic shield, the result could be truly devastating.
The article goes on to describe the fall out from a globally fried electrical grid.
Everything from transportation, food and water accessibility, even basic health care as we know it, gone with only 90 seconds of warning due to a solar upheaval.
Apparently Old Sol has thrown a minor version of such a cosmic temper tantrum before.
Back in 1859 an astronomer named Richard Carrington noted an intense burst of white light from a patch of sun spots. For the next eight days the Aurora Borealis was seen as far south as the equator. Wire to wire telegraph stations were thrown off the air and magnetic measuring devices were driven off the scale.
This incident known as the Carrington Event would have an immensely greater impact on our wired in culture today.
Imagine everything that uses electricity rendered useless, not just for eight days.
The article goes on to point out that the time required for the manufacture and re-installment of transformers would render us powerless for around eight years.
Back to the dark ages in the twinkling of an eye.
The essential message of the article is pretty clear.
The possibility of such a sudden change exists.
The experts tell us so.
So we should all make every possible effort to be ready.
Does this sound the least bit familiar?
But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.
For when they say, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape. (I Thessalonians 5:1-3)
The Bible tells us that there is another world changing event that will happen one day without warning – Jesus coming back to snatch out His people before the beginning of a seven year period of Hell on Earth called the Tribulation.
If you think the failure of an electrical grid sounds devastating, what would happen to this world if suddenly 100 million people vanished without a trace?
Cars suddenly without drivers? Planes without pilots?
Homes and bank accounts without owners? Bills with out debtors to pay them?
Key leaders in the community, in finance, in government, in the military suddenly gone.
Would this world be rocked?
But the possibility of another Carrington Event has been predicted by experts – people with credibility on the subject!
May I suggest the event known as the Rapture has also been predicted by an even more trustworthy source.
“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only. But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be.
Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. (Matthew 24:36-41)
Jesus not only predicted this future event, but presented a sinless life, unprecedented demonstrations of divine power and even a literal resurrection from the dead in a moment of history as His credentials for being taken seriously.
But there is another interesting similarity between these sobering predictions – an appeal to be ready.
Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming.
But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.
Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. (Matthew 24:42-44)
How can we be ready for this world shattering event?
Ask yourself this simple question –
Do I have a real relationship with the One Who is going to come back for His people?
This doesn’t mean joining a church, or performing heroic spiritual deeds.
Having a relationship with Jesus is as simple as saying yes to His offer of forgiveness and a brand new life from God.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name. (John 1:12)
Have you made a conscious decision to receive Jesus as your Savior?
How can you receive Jesus? Through prayer- simply tell God that you desire to know Him, be forgiven by him and be a part of His forever family.
For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” (Romans 10:13)
There is coming a day that will make another Carrington event look like a walk in the park.
The wise person will be ready.
The unwise, not so much.
